If reaching behind your back feels like wrestling an invisible bear…or you notice that your shoulder feels like it’s made of concrete instead of muscle; let me introduce you to one of my favorite sneaky-powerful mobility drills: The Sleeper Stretch.

Now before you panic, no, you don’t need to do this in your pajamas. This stretch isn’t about sleep, it’s about waking up some seriously overlooked shoulder mechanics.

Unlock Your Shoulder Strength: A Comprehensive Guide to Deltoid Muscles with In-Home Personal Training in Chicago

👉 What It Targets:

This move hones in on the posterior shoulder capsule, including muscles like your posterior deltoid, infraspinatus, and teres minor…aka the crew responsible for shoulder stability, internal rotation, and freedom of movement. If you sit a lot, train a lot, or throw punches, weights, or baseballs for fun, this one’s a must.

🧠 Why You Should Care:

  • Improves internal shoulder rotation (vital for performance & posture)

  • Reduces tightness in the back of the shoulder

  • Promotes better joint alignment and helps prevent impingement

  • A game-changer for lifters, boxers, desk warriors, and anyone with a shoulder

🔧 How to Perform It (and Not Screw It Up):

  1. Lie on your side (stretching side down) on a mat. Use a foam roller or yoga block under your head to stay aligned.
  2. Position your bottom arm in front of you at 70–90°, elbow bent at 90°.
  3. Pin your scapula to the floor—no escaping allowed. This keeps the stretch in the shoulder, not the spine.
  4. Stack your top hand over your bottom wrist and gently press it down. You should feel a stretch in the back of the shoulder—not pain, not rage.
  5. Hold for 30–120 seconds. Breathe. Don’t rush. Repeat on the other side—because symmetry, people.

🚫 Pro Tips to Avoid Doing It Wrong:

  • If your shoulder blade lifts—you’re cheating. Reset and pin it down.

  • Don’t crank the arm into the floor like you’re trying to arm wrestle gravity. This is a gentle, controlled stretch. Not a wrestling match.

Overall: Got Tight Shoulders? This One Is For You.

Tight shoulders aren’t just annoying, they’re a performance liability. The Sleeper Stretch is a small, smart move that can unlock a big part of your shoulder game, whether you’re throwing punches, pressing heavy, or just trying to feel less like a statue.

As always, if your shoulder’s acting up or feels weird, shoot me a message, I’m here to help you move better, perform stronger, and recover smarter.
